Training Development

As a partner in a training establishment that has a proud 200 year heritage in engineering, innovation and training, Holdfast has made it a priority to provide efficient and effective student centric training through the use of blended learning.

In 2009, the Corps of Royal Engineers had a regular Army establishment of some 9,700 situated globally and of these approximately 4000 personnel completed some form of training at the RSME during the year. With similarly large numbers of personnel continually passing though the RSME on an annual basis, it is essential that quality of the training remains high, accessible and current.

Training development at the RSME is primarily focused on the transformation of training in order that personnel may be provided with the best training to meet their needs and those of the Field Army. Holdfast continues to build on the RSME's historic foundations through the integration of new learning methodologies and technologies so that training can be better focussed to meet operational and emerging requirements. An Enhanced Learning Environment (ELE) has been introduced that offers students a different learning experience; it gives the learner the opportunity to undertake self paced learning as well as carryout pre-reading before arriving on their course and the ability to reach back into the RSME throughout their career.

Additionally a review of the training pipeline has been undertaken to establish those elements of training that must be delivered, those that should be delivered and those that could be delivered. This approach has yielded improved effectiveness and efficiency with most soldiers spending less time awaiting training, being better trained and more highly motivated but, most importantly,  spending less time in training thereby increasing the Field Army's operational capacity. 

 The training transformation programme has enabled:

  • The optimisation of time, space, technology and the trainer; course lengths have been reduced by an average of 20%
  • The student to become the centre of learning
  • Increased incentivisation and inspiration
  • Independent and collaborative working
  • Students to learn where and when they choose
  • Investment in platforms such as tablets and othet mobile devices
  • Through life activity (reach forward and reach back)
  • Investment in the trainer to become coach and mentor
  • Repurposement of training for Regular and Reserve
  • Savings: Financial, resource and capacity

In addition to the introduction of the ELE, other technologies have been introduced into the training environment with great effect. From the installation of WIFI and the wider use of simultaion including the introduction of the Command Training Facility at Minley, to the use of 3D printers to produce 3D training models, the training experience has been significantly enhanced.
